Usually the NIC is attacched to a serial eeprom 93c46 or 93c56 where it stores every non volatile informations (like PCI info, MAC address, etc...).
With PonyProg you can read or write the 93c46/56 chip without problems, but not in-system. You need to remove thee eeprom and insert it in the programmer socket.
